Why does the St Philips Site have to close down?
Over the last few years, we have found it increasingly difficult to recruit staff into job vacancies at the practice. This has been the case when trying to recruit new doctors, nurses, and administrative staff. We have found it increasingly difficult to fully staff 3 buildings. With staff sometimes spread thinly across several sites, it is difficult to ensure peer support is there for the staff who need it and to provide a full range of services at all 3 sites.
The St Philips building is small and needs substantial refurbishment to comply with NHS standards.
Dr Kemp, who ran the St Philips Practice as a single-handed GP for several years before merging with Avenue House Surgery, has a planned retirement in May 2023 and the practice building is owned by Dr Kemp. The remaining GPs would need to raise finance to purchase the building from Dr Kemp and this is not an option for them at the present time.
If that site closes, do I have to register with a different GP Practice?
Absolutely not. As a patient of Inspire Health, your registration with the practice will continue as normal. You will still have access to all the usual clinical and administrative services. The only difference will be that for any face-to-face appointments you would be asked to attend one of our other sites, either Avenue House Surgery in Chesterfield or Jepson Road in Hasland. The surgery at Jepson Road is less than 1 mile away from St Philips so we hope that patients will have minimum inconvenience.
When would the site close down?
The practice is working towards 31st May 2023 for the date of closure. This date may change depending on the circumstances.
What will happen to the St Philips Drive Surgery building?
We are unclear at present what will happen to the St Philips Drive building if the closure as a GP Practice goes ahead.
What will happen to the surgery staff?
All the staff at St Philips Drive would maintain their usual employment but work from a different site.
When Dr Kemp retires, who will be my new GP?
Your usual GP will be switched to one of the other doctors at the practice. You can request a specific GP if you would like to and you are free to see any GP of your choice, although this can sometime mean a slightly longer wait to be seen or receive a telephone call.
